ELM327 CAN-Bus USB OBD2 interface
Product Description

What Is This Multi-Protocol Interface?

The Controller Area Network (CAN) has become the standard of choice for most automotive manufacturers. Approved for use as an ISO and EPA diagnostic network, its usage continues to grow. Shown in Figure 1, this interface is designed to act as a bridge between those On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) ports and PC USB ports. It uses ELM327 IC chip which builds on improved versions of the proven ELM320, ELM 322, and ELM 323 OBD interfaces by adding four CAN protocols to them. The IC chip can automatically sense and convert the nine most common protocols in use today, which makes such an interface capable of working with almost all vehicles. Here are some key characteristics and improvements offered by this interface and ELM327 chip:

  • An interface set of a direct plug-in device and USB configuration for ease of use.

  • When in application, it requires PC with a Serial port.

  • Slim design on the OBD-II plug-in end allows the maximum vehicle fit-ability by the interface.

  • Supports J1850 VPW and PWM, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4 as well as ISO 15765-4 (CAN-Bus).

  • Supports J1939 (CAN-Bus) through software switch setting.

  • Auto protocol search.

  • Uses the same simple ASCII command interface.

  • Internal EEPROM can remember the last protocol.

  • Voltage input monitors your vehicle battery.

  • Low power CMOS design.

As a multi-protocol device, this interface shall be suitable for all the vehicles sold the North America market since 1996 regardless of their makes. When in use, it automatically searches for a valid protocol. It measures 12cm x 6cm x 2.5cm (L x W x H), weighs 4.25 oz, comes with a DLC and Serial cables.

Several ELM chip dedicated software products are listed below; the screenshots included below provide visual clues important to many potential users. Use the hyperlinks listed for the introduction to their rich functions as well as wide capabilities and for demo downloads to try out.

: ScanTool.net OBD-II software, Ver. 1.08 or ScanTool.net v1.10 (DOS/Windows)

: PCMScan for Windows (Ver. 1.0) or PCMSCAN

: ScanMaster Pro for Windows (Ver. 1.0) or ScanMaster v1.1 for ElmScan 5 (Demo) or ScanMaster-ELM

: WGIobdii (Ver. 3.4a)

: DigiMoto for Window (Ver. 3.7)

: DigiMoto for Pocket PC (Ver. 1.0)

What Exactly Can You Do with This Multi-Protocol Interface and the Software?

In general, this interface, together with a computer and software (as shown in Figure 2) making a powerful and flexible scanning tool at home. With ScanTool.net v1.10, this interface can work with all vehicles regardless of their makes as long as they are newer than model year 1996 in the US. As a typical example, it lets you perform the following operations:

  • Read diagnostic trouble codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic code definitions in the database)

  • Clear trouble codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" light)

  • Display current sensor data, including::

  • Engine RPM

  • Calculated Load Value

  • Coolant Temperature

  • Fuel System Status

  • Vehicle Speed

  • Short Term Fuel Trim

  • Long Term Fuel Trim

  • Intake Manifold Pressure

  • Timing Advance

  • Intake Air Temperature

  • Air Flow Rate

  • Absolute Throttle Position

  • Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short term fuel trims

  • Fuel System status

  • Fuel Pressure

  • Many others...

With ScanMaster-ELM which is designed for use with the ELM327 multi-protocol interface, you get the follow features

  • Multi-Protocol Support:

  • SAE J1850 PWM (41.6 kbaud) (ELM327 only)

  • SAE J1850 VPW (10.4 kbaud) (ELM327 only)

  • ISO 9141-2 (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)

  • ISO 14230-4 KWP (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)

  • ISO 14230-4 KWP (fast init, 10.4 kbaud)

  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (11 bit ID, 500 kbaud) (ELM327 only)

  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (29 bit ID, 500 kbaud) (ELM327 only)

  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (11 bit ID, 250 kbaud) (ELM327 only)

  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (29 bit ID, 250 kbaud) (ELM327 only)
  • Automatically determines and identifies to the user the vehicle communication protocol under test.

  • Supports generic SAE J1979 (Mode $01) parameter identifiers (PIDs) $00 through $4E.

  • Displays all or custom list of diagnostic data parameters supported by the vehicle's OBDII controller with line graphs and meters.

  • Views the condition of the vehicle system at the time when an emission related diagnostic trouble was stored with ‘Freeze Frame’ mode.

  • Reads emission DTCs (and their common SAE descriptions) that cause the MIL to be illuminated. Plus, displays the DTC number for the non-SAE defined DTC numbers and descriptions that are reported by OBD-II emission ECUs.

  •  Supports over 4200 generic diagnostic trouble codes descriptions from SAE J2012 and over 3600 enhanced OBDII codes, or a code defined by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

  • Clears all emissions-related diagnostic information (Mode $04).

  • Displays specific information applicable to the vehicle under test (VIN, Calibration ID, Calibration Verification Number, In-Use Performance Tracking).

  • Metric and English units of measure.

  • Minimum platform and software requirements

What Are PC and OS Requirements?

You must have Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later installed on your computer.

Minimum hardware requirement:

  • Pentium 200MHz or faster

  • 64MB of RAM or more

  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Driver

  • USB Port

What About Older Vehicles?

For European emission related standards, EOBD starting in year 2000 is the equivalent of OBD-II (ODB-2) in the US. There are three adapters, for Mercedes-Benz (38-pin), BMW (20-pin), and Volkswagen/Audi (2X2), are for those vehicles yet equipped with the OBD-II SAE J1962 data link port. These adapters are £8 each please see the adapter cables page for purchasing.
