Based on time-tested, proven technology, ElmScan 5 Compact lets you turn your computer into a sophisticated diagnostic system. The scan tool is a breeze to install and configure, and provides a lot more information about your vehicle, than a handheld scan tool. It is fully OBD-2 compliant, and works with any Windows PC with a USB port. ElmScan 5 Compact includes all necessary hardware and software to diagnose your vehicle's problems:
  • Turn off Check Engine Light, and erase stored diagnostic information
  • Check Emissions Readiness
  • Read and Erase Trouble Codes (Generic and Manufacturer-Specific)
  • Display 60+ Real-Time Parameters

What Is This Multi-Protocol Interface?

The Controller Area Network (CAN) has become the standard of choice for most automotive manufacturers. Approved for use as an ISO and EPA diagnostic network, its usage continues to grow. Shown in Figure 1, this interface is designed to act as a bridge between those On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) ports and PC USB ports. It uses an IC chip which builds on improved versions of older versions of OBD interfaces by adding four CAN protocols to them. The IC chip can automatically sense and convert the nine most common protocols in use today, which makes such an interface capable of working with almost all vehicles. Here are some key characteristics and improvements offered by this interface:

  • An interface set of a direct plug-in device and USB configuration for ease of use.
  • When in application, it requires PC with a Serial port.
  • Slim design on the OBD-II plug-in end allows the maximum vehicle fit-ability by the interface.
  • Supports J1850 VPW and PWM, ISO 9141-2, ISO 14230-4 as well as ISO 15765-4 (CAN-Bus).
  • Supports J1939 (CAN-Bus) through software switch setting.
  • Auto protocol search.
  • Uses the same simple ASCII command interface.
  • Internal EEPROM can remember the last protocol.
  • Voltage input monitors your vehicle battery.
  • Low power CMOS design.

As a multi-protocol device, this interface is suitable for all the vehicles sold in the North America since 1996 and all vehicles Petrol in the EU since 2001 and Diesel since 2004 regardless of their makes. When in use, it automatically searches for a valid protocol.

What Exactly Can You Do with This Multi-Protocol Interface and the Software?

In general, this interface, together with a computer and software making a powerful and flexible scanning tool at home. With ScanTool.net v1.10, this interface can work with all vehicles regardless of their makes as long as they are OBD2 or EOBD compliant. As a typical example, it lets you perform the following operations:

  • Read diagnostic trouble codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic code definitions in the database)
  • Clear trouble codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" light)
  • Display current sensor data, including::
    • Engine RPM
    • Calculated Load Value
    • Coolant Temperature
    • Fuel System Status
    • Vehicle Speed
    • Short Term Fuel Trim
    • Long Term Fuel Trim
    • Intake Manifold Pressure
    • Timing Advance
    • Intake Air Temperature
    • Air Flow Rate
    • Absolute Throttle Position
    • Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short term fuel trims
    • Fuel System status
    • Fuel Pressure
    • Many others...

Multi-Protocol Support:

  • SAE J1850 PWM (41.6 kbaud)
  • SAE J1850 VPW (10.4 kbaud)
  • ISO 9141-2 (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)
  • ISO 14230-4 KWP (5 baud init, 10.4 kbaud)
  • ISO 14230-4 KWP (fast init, 10.4 kbaud)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (11 bit ID, 500 kbaud)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (29 bit ID, 500 kbaud)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (11 bit ID, 250 kbaud)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (29 bit ID, 250 kbaud)

Main Features

  • Automatically determines and identifies to the user the vehicle communication protocol under test.
  • Supports generic SAE J1979 (Mode $01) parameter identifiers (PIDs) $00 through $4E.
  • Displays all or custom list of diagnostic data parameters supported by the vehicle's OBDII controller with line graphs and meters.
  • Views the condition of the vehicle system at the time when an emission related diagnostic trouble was stored with ‘Freeze Frame’ mode.
  • Reads emission DTCs (and their common SAE descriptions) that cause the MIL to be illuminated. Plus, displays the DTC number for the non-SAE defined DTC numbers and descriptions that are reported by OBD-II emission ECUs.
  • Supports over 4200 generic diagnostic trouble codes descriptions from SAE J2012 and over 3600 enhanced OBDII codes, or a code defined by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
  • Clears all emissions-related diagnostic information (Mode $04).
  • Displays specific information applicable to the vehicle under test (VIN, Calibration ID, Calibration Verification Number, In-Use Performance Tracking).
  • Metric and English units of measure.

Minimum platform and software requirements

What Are PC and OS Requirements?

  • You must have Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP with Internet Explorer 5.01 or later installed on your computer.
  • Minimum hardware requirement:
  • Pentium 200MHz or faster
  • 64MB of RAM or more
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Driver
  • USB Port

What About Older Vehicles?

For European emission related standards, EOBD starting in year 2000 is the equivalent of OBD-II (ODB-2) in the US. There are three adapters, for Mercedes-Benz (38-pin), BMW (20-pin), and Volkswagen/Audi (2X2), are for those vehicles yet equipped with the OBD-II SAE J1962 data link port.

ScanXL™ gives you more powerful diagnostic support than any other ELM-based software on the market today! ScanXL™ ELM supports all powertrain accessible through the legislated OBD-II protocols.

ScanXL™ supports 1996* and newer passenger vehicles whether it be US, Asian, or European.
Supported OBD-II protocols: J1850 (PWM and VPW), ISO-9141, and ISO-14230 (KWP2000), and ISO-15765 (CAN).

*1996 is the year the OBD-II system was standardized for passenger vehicles sold in the United States. In Europe, this was standardized in 2001 for petrol vehicles and 2004 for diesel passenger cars. Please verify that your vehicle is OBD-II compliant before purchasing.

ScanXL is an advanced diagnostic software package for use exclusively with the ElmScan 5 series of OBD-II compliant scan tools. This feature-packed software will meet the needs of the professional mechanic and automotive enthusiast alike. ScanXL goes beyond reading trouble codes and sensor data to bring you these exciting features:

  • Use ScanXL's built-in Dyno and Drag Strip to measure horsepower (manual transmission only) and acceleration.

  • Colorful and customizable Graphs and Gauges give you graphical view of sensor data.

  • With Freeze Frames you will be able to retrieve a "snap-shot" of sensor data when your ECU stores trouble codes.

  • Don't wait until you have a problem with your vehicle. Use ScanXL's Data Logger to record healthy engine parameters and use that data to help spot problems in the future.

  • Set ScanXL's Alert feature to let you know when your engine coolant (and other parameters) is getting too hot before it's too late!

  • After clearing trouble codes, check Monitor Status to see if your vehicle is ready for emissions testing.

  • The Vehicle Manager can keep track of multiple vehicles and owners simultaneously.

  • And much more…
