PCMCIA Serial Card

Most modern laptops do no longer come with a Com or serial (RS232) port.  This is unfortunate as a lot of interfaces for car diagnostics still use these ports and most of the software in use today requires a serial port. 

The lack of serial ports has been in part solved by manufacturers making USB diagnostic devices,  However in the main these are not true USB devices and use clever software drivers to emulate a serial port.  This translation through a USB port can cause problems and is not always effective.

Using the PCMCIA slot of the laptop a more stable COM port can be created thus having a better chance of diagnosing the vehicle fault and having fewer problems setting up.  Not only that, by having this true serial port you can then buy the serial devices which will in fact save you money as they are quite often cheaper.
